"Unusual, refreshing and original" - LONDON JAZZ
"Technically brilliant" - JACQUI DANKWORTH
Northumbrian-born, London-based musician Alison Beck is a jazz / gospel / session vocalist, composer, improviser and workshop leader.
Alison is a member of the UK's premier gospel choir, London Community Gospel Choir. With them she has recorded vocals for Madonna's latest album, performed for the Queen at her national birthday celebration on the Mall, and appeared at the 2017 Brit Awards.
With her jazz 'hat' on Alison has performed at countless leading venues including Ronnie Scott's, The Vortex, Union Chapel, The Forge and The 606 Club and is known as an expressive, talented improviser.
Her string of credits as an in-demand vocalist include gigs with genre-defying innovators The Heritage Orchestra (Goldie at The Royal Festival Hall, Anna Calvi in the Edinburgh International Festival). She performed in the BBC Proms with American jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington in his 27-piece gospel choir. She has collaborated with World Champion beatboxer Bellatrix.
She co-produced Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir's groundbreaking gospel oratorio ‘The Resurrection’, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 2 (recorded at Maida Vale Studios), Radio 4, and performed live to a sell-out crowd at London’s Jazz Café.
Alison is a lead vocalist for the King Cave Project, an experimental church music collective (“jaw-dropping fusion of genres, breathtaking musicality and often heartbreaking melodies” - Cross Rhythms) which has created cutting-edge worship experiences at St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Central Hall, Greenbelt Festival, BBC Radio 3 and the Edinburgh Fringe. Find out more about the new spin-off project, One True Vine.
Alison sometimes cantors (leads the singing) in services at St James's Piccadilly. You can read more about her adventures in the land of English church music here.
She specialises in leading non-scary, inspirational and uplifting gospel singing workshops for people of all backgrounds and ability levels. Read more about her workshops here.
Alison is forging a reputation as a gifted arranger and composer: she wrote underscore music and stings for NBC’s hit television show The Sing-Off in the USA, and her arrangement of Harry Nilsson's 'Everybody's Talkin'' was sung by Rebecca Ferguson + gospel choir at the memorial of Zaha Hadid at St Paul's Cathedral.
In 2011 Alison graduated with a Masters in Jazz from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she was awarded a rare Distinction for her final recital.
